Interactive public art

Public artworks shaped by the people who encounter them.

Interactive public art responds to people. Movement, facial expression or another input changes what an artwork does, giving participants a role in its visual, sonic or physical behaviour.

What can participation look like?

RIPPLE uses an interface to connect participants with changing water imagery. ECHO/OHCE brings a person’s face into a monumental sculptural portrait. Electric Puppet combines character-making with movement. Each offers a different balance between individual agency and shared public viewing.

Which format suits a site?

Begin with the audience and setting. A drop-in experience needs a clear invitation and understandable feedback. A facilitated workshop can support a longer creative process. A performance-led format needs space for both the people taking part and those watching. The choice should follow the brief rather than a preferred piece of equipment.

What should be agreed before production?

Define the interaction, audience capacity, viewing routes, operating period and responsibility for facilitation. If images or voices are captured, agree consent, moderation, retention and deletion before testing. Confirm access needs with the venue and participants; no single interface suits everyone.

How does a commissioning conversation develop?

Start with the place, purpose and audience. Then explore creative options, test feasibility and define the production scope. Content, equipment, fabrication, installation, rehearsal and operation need clear owners. The exact stages and schedule are agreed for the project, rather than promised as a fixed package.

What should success mean?

Choose measures linked to your purpose: completed interactions, waiting time, ease of use, participant feedback or an agreed learning prompt. Record a baseline where a comparison is useful. Visually striking work does not by itself establish economic uplift, lasting learning or social impact.
